CSA - What is It and is It for You?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from the farmer. Here are the basics:  a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the consumer.  Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables and/or fruit, but other farm products may be included.  Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receives a container of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.  Benefits to the consumer include, but are not limited to:

  • Exposure to high-quality fruit and vegetables in their most natural state, harvested at their peak of freshness.
  • Possible exposure to new kinds of fruit and vegetables, as well as tips on cooking them.
  • Opportunity to build a relationship with the farmer who grows the food you eat.
  • Opportunities to learn more about where your food is grown and how it makes its way from farm to table.

CSA shares are available in a SUMMER SHARE (June, July, and August) - 12 weeks; and again in a FALL SHARE (Sept., October) - 8 weeks.  Payment for shares can be made in full at the time of sign-up or broken into two installments, the first half due when you sign up and the second due the 1st day you pick up your first share.  Cost for shares:

  • $240 for a Summer Share
  • $160 for a Fall Share
  • Payment for your share can be made by cash, debit or credit card.
Items each week will be equivalent to at least $20 in fruit and/or vegetables.  Shares may be picked up at any of the markets we attend or at our farm.
